| Why Seniors? |
| |
Why you should target the Seniors demographic, and why target them on the internet, could literally take up a whole book! Since you are not here to read a book, we will at least highlight some of the major reasons this segment of our society should be focused on by businesses and, especially, real estate businesses via the internet. Pew Research Center, back in 2004 when we first started this project, said..."Silver surfers or the 'silver tsunami' of older Internet users is gaining momentum. Internet users in their 50's who work, shop and keep in touch with friends and family online will age into and transform the wired senior population." Senior citizens are sophisticated and have unprecedented buying power. Now is the time to farm your real estate services to this fast growing segment of our society. Just consider some more facts and observations that various studies of the Seniors demographic have revealed.

Market Share and Wealth |
A 2004 study, again by Pew Research Center, showed that the Seniors' market in the United States is increasing at a rate three times faster than all other age groups in the nation. By 2010, the 50+ segment in the U.S. will grow by 21 million while the 18-34 age segment will grow by just five million. In addition, Seniors are more affluent than the general population with more disposable money to spend. Their discretionary income is approximately twice that of 25-29 year olds. |

Internet Use |
As of 2004, approximately 58% of Senior Americans aged 50-64 went online. This number is, of course, greater today. Approximately 46% had been using the Internet for 5 years and, of those, 94% used the Net to communicate with friends and family, 72% went online for news, 70% went online for health-related information, 51% researched various other topics, and 35% played games. Older women are leading the charge online and the gender ratio amongst "wired seniors" is now equal.

Mobility |
Of course, this is a no-brainer. Seniors are on the go! They move around. They sell their big house and downscale. They sell their small house and upscale. How many times have you come across an empty-nester couple who raised their family of five in an 1100 square foot rambler with three bedrooms and 1 bath? Now they're buying a 3500 square foot, four bedroom, three bath, dream home for the two of them! Then there's the study that showed 21% of Seniors expect to move to an entirely new part of the country. Yes, Seniors are on the move and you need to develop Top of Mind Awareness with them!
